When Ryan Solano gives tours of Frisco ISD’s newest high school, people tend to get excited about the aesthetics and open space.

Solano, the Principal of Panther Creek High School, has been able to visit the campus since around August of last year. He’s also gotten to look at blueprints on a consistent basis, help select furniture and mural placements, and attend to all the elements that come with being a principal of a not-yet-open high school.

Through it all, the vision for Panther Creek High School has transformed from rendering to reality.

“It is an unbelievable place,” Solano said Wednesday. “I still get chills walking around.”

And over the next few days, the anticipation will become reality — Panther Creek High School is slated to welcome students as school starts on Wednesday, Aug. 10.

During a Wednesday, Aug. 3, visit to the campus, activity is bustling inside the brand new campus. Final touches are going up around the building, sound equipment is being tested, student council representatives are preparing for the school year and teachers are in the midst of preparing their new classrooms.

It all serves as a prelude to the activity that will soon fill the campus come Aug. 10.

A quick glance around the school’s interior reveals a dedication to providing natural light and space, as well as a theme of wood paneling that stretches across the school in the form of wall accents, ceiling finishes and more.

Throughout the campus, there is also an undeniable emphasis on flexibility. Solano said there are 33 flex spaces scattered around the campus — some are extensions of classrooms while others are walled in glass. The campus even lends itself to learning in unexpected places: staircases include seating options complete with power outlets.

It’s a theme that also extends into the building’s 14 science labs, which feature moveable tables and hanging charging stations, as well as in general classrooms where tables on wheels open the door to a variety of layout configurations.

“We’re going to emphasize on this campus, along with the knowledge, teaching kids skills to be ready for the future,” Solano said, “and that’s our vision, is to equip learners with skills for their future.”

That includes assessing four outcomes, Solano added, including collaboration, written communication, oral communication and student agency.

The campus includes both spaces for teachers to plan and collaborate as well as additional spots that allow teachers to work individually, but outside of an isolated classroom.

One teacher collaboration space includes windows that are open to the dining commons.

“So it can be viewable by students so students can see what it looks like to be an adult and work together and collaborate,” Solano said.

The school, located within the sightline of the nearby PGA of America Headquarters, is located in the far northwest portion of Frisco. During its first school year in operation, Panther Creek High School will host under 800 students total in grades 9 through 11. The school is built to hold a capacity of 2,100, Solano said.
